It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since we made the move to Arizona, and one of the reasons I absolutely love being here is the proximity of the mountains. They’re practically in our backyard, and the ability to step out of our home and onto a trail has become a cherished aspect of our daily lives.
Recently, my 5-year-old and I embarked on a hiking adventure. At this age, kids often prefer the excitement of playgrounds over the tranquility of hiking trails. My son was no different. Determined to share my love for hiking with him, I brainstormed creative ways to make it appealing.
The breakthrough came when I suggested bringing along his RC toy cars. The idea of navigating the trails with his remote-controlled cars instantly captured his interest. The only catch – our pace resembled that of a turtle. But, hey, progress is progress!
In the initial outings, fatigue would set in on the way back home, prompting me to carry him on my back. However, as we continued, he gradually acclimated to walking uphill. The challenge of climbing hills added a sense of achievement, boosting his enthusiasm.
Recognizing the need for proper gear, I invested in hiking shoes and sticks. Rocks and hills posed slipping hazards, and regular tennis shoes lacked the necessary grip. The sticks were essential, especially when tackling steeper areas where my little one needed a helping hand.
When the eagerly awaited shoes and sticks arrived, his excitement was palpable. Leaving behind his RV toy car, we ascended the hill, and the difference was remarkable. The shoes provided the support needed, and though he was still figuring out the optimal use of the hiking sticks, we managed a delightful hour and a half hike together.

Throughout the hike, I made a conscious effort to let him dictate our stops. I wanted to ensure he viewed this experience as enjoyable, not as a chore or workout. Creating positive associations with hiking is key to fostering his continued interest.
Living in the United States, particularly in Arizona, is a stark contrast to our time in Seoul. Here, nature is abundant and not overrun by crowds. The relaxed pace of life and the accessibility of the outdoors have made our time in Arizona truly special. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most fulfilling adventures are right outside our doorstep.
